It has been my personal experience with castor oil(doing a 3 mth castor oil challenge@kinkycurlycoilyme.com) that i can say: Castor oil is very beneficial for hair. It has thicken and grow my hair in 3 months longer then if i was not to use the oil. My hair loves it. I use the oil in my weekly wash routine: pre-poo with castor oil,co-wash and deep condition with castor oil. I also would use my castor oil as a sealant after doing my moisturize routine after every wash and would use my oil to seal my hair when i have to re-moisturize throw the week. I would use my castor oil when i would do my scalp massages. I would do them for 5 to 10 minutes a day. I added some of the oil to my spray bottle that i use every morning and night . I also add castor oil to all my homemade mixes (Shea butter mix,Crisco mix, and my hot oil treatments. At all ends my hair when kept on a strict weekly schedule and with love and care and taken my time to get my hair on tract healthy and growing castor oil help me so much.
Here is one of the recipes i use in my spray bottle
Moisturizer Spritz
3 oz of Aloe Vera Juice
3 oz of Rose water

2 tsp of leaven in condition
2 or 3 tsp Vegetable glycerine
5 drops of peppermint essential oil
5 drops of lavender essential
4 drops Vitamin e oil
1 teaspoon msm power
i also add a few drops of these oil
Castor oil
Olive oil
Sweet almond oil
Grape seed oil
Jojoba oil
Avocado oil
